The Culture Puzzle Figuring Out If You Fit In - Workology

The Culture Puzzle Figuring Out If You Fit In - Workology Happy people attract and retain other happy people. A few weeks ago, I was asked to lead an information session at a hiring event. I was somewhat reluctant to accept given the fact that I too was on the job market. I wasn’t sure my insight would be appreciated since, despite my professional expertise in Talent Acquisition and Recruiting, I could be easily viewed as their equal. I communicated my reservations to the event organizer. In an effort to eliminate my misgivings, he provided details about the event, the attendees, and the participating companies. I learned that the event was designed to be more of an invitational than a cattle-call type job fair.   The majority of attendees were currently employed, held active security clearances, and were pre-screened prior to the event.   I was familiar with almost all of the participating companies since they operated in the industry with which I am most experienced. He boasted that I would probably know and/or have worked with a number of the recruiters who be there. I accepted to the challenge, anyway. Free to speak about any topic I desired, I thought it’d be beneficial to use my recruiting experience with the job seeker in mind instead of the organization.  I asked myself, “What would like to hear?” Most, if not all, job seekers have been given advice on the following go-to topics: Resume Writing Social Media Profiles Interviewing Negotiating Offers. I’m not one to follow the crowd so I settled on the topic, “The Culture Puzzle: Figuring Out If You Fit In.” I encouraged the job seekers to incorporate cultural fit into choosing the next position or company along with their other “must haves”.   I used an example from my past where I accepted a position in spite of the clear warning signs that it wasn’t a fit. The 3 years I spent there were miserable at worst and indifferent at best. I was so eager to get away from that place that it only took 6K and the promise of more responsibility to convince me to leave.   Once again, I didn’t factor culture into the decision and placed myself into a more toxic work environment.   I revealed that one of the reasons I went to the last company, the toxic one, was because I would be reporting to a former manager from my best employer. During the question and answer period one of the attendees asked me a profoundly thoughtful question. Since people make up the culture, what was the issue? The missing piece was fun. It started with breakfast.   Every Friday the Senior HR Manager brought in bagels or donuts, coffee and juice. If he was feeling especially generous, Chic-fil-A was our treat. It was something to look forward to at the end of a hectic workweek.   It provided an escape from worrying about the changes that were occurring in the company.   It allowed HR and Recruiting to set the emotional tone for the building. Happy people attract and retain other happy people. Taking the lead from the Sr. HR Manager, we not only continued the Friday breakfast, we saw a need to incorporate additional fun activities. First came the celebrations; birthdays, holidays, marriages, baby showers, and new homes. Jokes, pranks, and spontaneous activities to invoke laughter soon followed.   This gave way to contests like best work space decorations and wind-up toy races to name a few. We also found ways to revel in our work achievements, convincing management to incentivize high performance. Over time, a subculture developed in our group. At the heart of it was fun.   Along the way other groups started to replicate our model and fun was now a part of our overall company culture. “Fun” is an essential piece of company culture. Some of the benefits include:                              Motivates Employees                                   Produces greater job satisfaction                               Improves Productivity                                 Increases Engagement                               Fosters Creativity                                                       Encourages Teamwork                               Talent Attraction Tool                                     Employee Loyalty The next time you are on the market for a new position Assess the culture of your current or most recent employer Determine your culture must haves Evaluate the culture of your prospective employer. Lastly, if “fun” is an important aspect of company culture for you (and it should be), make sure that your prospective employer defines and fun in a manner that is a fit for you,

What Happened to My Career The Dangers of Complacency - Work It Daily

What Befell My Career The Dangers of Complacency - Work It Daily Something I hear a ton from work searchers as of late is that they have never at any point needed to really search for an occupation previously. They sound totally stunned. What's more, hurt, as well. Also, I'll really state it: They sound like they've encountered lost qualification. So what was the deal? The issue isn't that they either left an occupation, lost an employment, or got laid off. The enchantment fixing is a lot greater than the way that they are done working at the organization. In all actuality numerous individuals become totally self-satisfied about structure their profession while they are really working. Is it accurate to say that they are keeping their systems energetic and state-of-the-art? Is it accurate to say that they are including new contacts and developing bona fide connections? Have they kept up on their hands on information? Is it accurate to say that they are still individuals from key industry associations? Is it accurate to say that they are locked in and included as a volunteer? We as a whole know the response to this one… I got excessively occupied. Shockingly, this isn't a reason. Take a gander at the individuals who are best in their vocations, and you'll see occupied experts who keep on adjusting these components notwithstanding completing their occupations. The present economy doesn't welcome lack of concern; it requires individual backing. The What occurred? question truly exists in yourself. What happened is that you permitted yourself to get devoured by work, and in the end neglect to deal with yourself and support the seeds that will permit your vocation to develop… and that implies watching out for the nursery of systems administration contacts to keep those harvests blooming. Rather, they evaporated; disregarded. This isn't anything but difficult to hear, yet every time I ask customers what they have done to keep their own vocation support moving while they've been at work, the appropriate response is the equivalent without fail. Once more, they got excessively occupied. What actions are YOU taking to push your envelope? What number of individuals have you met for the current week? How are you keeping yourself applicable? Where are you constructing your administration abilities? Everything necessary is presenting a few objectives to keep these territories dynamic â€" at that point executing. Your vocation coincides unobtrusively and reliably nearby your genuine activity… it's your main thing to prop it up and dynamic that issues over the long haul. Furthermore, in the event that you do, at that point you won't pose inquiries like What occurred? in light of the fact that you have just avoided the lack of concern and supplanted it with backing. Career Advice for My Younger Self

Vocation Advice for My Younger Self Vocation Advice for My Younger Self Two intriguing things have transpired in the previous week. To begin with, I was posed the inquiry, What guidance would you give your more youthful self? Second, I went to my secondary school get-together. Obviously, the two minutes made me consider the past and the guidance I would give a youngster today. Above all else, Id let myself know â€" and some other youngster tuning in â€" to concentrate on your qualities. As you grow up, individuals will emphatically stress the significance of being balanced and similarly great at everything. Accordingly, we invest so much energy attempting to better the aptitudes we battle with. In any case, its the things were acceptable at that make us exceptional. You will go a lot farther on the off chance that you empty your time into a zone where you exceed expectations as opposed to lurching around in a territory at which youre not very good. Stress less over your shortcomings; commend your blessings. Second, Id state you ought to tune in to your gut. Individuals with well meaning goals will attempt to control you en route. They might be guardians, instructors, or companions. A portion of their recommendation might be useful, yet some may not be. You must sort the great from the awful. Do a gut check with yourself before you settle on major choices. Keep in mind: Most individuals are best at offering guidance for one explicit zone. Search out guides to help with explicit choices as opposed to all parts of your life. On the off chance that you start to head down a way that doesnt feel right, make a stride back and reevaluate. So also, if youre on a way that you make certain about and are accepting negative input from the individuals who may not be in a spot to exhort you, take as much time as necessary before exchanging ways. At the point when I settled on the choice to move from Oklahoma to upstate New York to contemplate building, I got some negative input, yet Im happy I remained concentrated on my main goal. It was the best decision I could have made. In conclusion, realize that your way may not be straight â€" and that is alright. Today, its normal for experts to change their profession ways many occasions through the span of their lives. Theres a decent possibility you will change jobs, enterprises, or fields more than once. Each change will take you consistently nearer to your definitive goal. Be set up for these changes. Theyre not disappointments. Dont stay excessively long if something isnt working. Change your way and keep on pushing ahead toward another path. That is the place you will discover your prosperity. One of the most significant components of finding your direction is remaining educated and arranged for change. Its not generally conceivable to foresee what will occur straightaway, however change itself is inventible. Being deft, mindful of your qualities, and ready to tune in to your instinct will benefit you. This is the counsel Id provide for the more youthful me, and in todays ever-changing employment showcase, its the advice Id give the youngsters of today, as well.
